Literature Text

A grey she-cat with a white face and tail stood atop the large rock, trickles of water dripping down it.  She placed her paws on dry stone and looked around.  Stars were shining above her, the forest in the distance was alive with the night.
“Spirits,” she called out, “help me!”
Her thoughts raced to earlier in the day when she had found her last remaining brother in a trap of solid webs.  The humans had come and taken him away while he screeched in terror.
She pricked her ears, ready for a response.  It was not heard of for the Spirits to answer to she-cats if not during their ceremony.  They spoke to the Spirit Talkers but Grey-Rose no longer had hers with her, he had been another brother taken away by the bare-skinned menace.
A breeze rustled the leaves around the lake and ruffled the fur around her ears.  She tried listening for something more, ready to hear an answer from her ancestors.
But nothing came.
She sighed, her tail drooping, and stepped away from the rock.  In the cool grass she climbed her way down the small cliff until all that was keeping her from the forest was the stone path the humans had created generations ago.
Instead of taking the path back to where her sisters and nieces and kittens lay, she walked to where seven pines stood near the sand.  She sat amidst them and gazed out at the lake.  She watched as the stars twinkled in the waves, the moon shone brilliantly, its reflection torn to pieces.
It was not long before a scent came near her, soon followed by a body.  She looked over her shoulder to see a white and black tom approaching.
“I could not help but overhear your dilemma,” he told her.
She sighed, “I am afraid for my family’s sake.”
He nodded, “I can imagine.”
She continued, “All my brothers are gone.  Who will talk to the Spirits?  Who will help raise my kittens?”
He swished his tail and blinked his green eyes.  “If it helps you at all, the Spirits told me that only a queen’s love conquers all.”
She tilted her head to the side, “What’s that mean?”
He flicked one of his black ears, “I cannot tell you what it means for your family, I can only understand how it befits mine.”
Frustrated, the grey she-cat dug her claws into the soft earth.
“Grey-Rose,” the tom mewed.
She looked back to him.
“Trust the Spirits, your family will be fine,” he promised her.
She blinked at him before dipping her head and replying, “Thank you, Cave-Tail.”
